Diseases in IEDB

This query feature allows users to query for the disease state of the host as stated by the authors.  Users can select from the radio buttons for the higher level disease categories of Any Disease, Infectious Disease, Allergic Disease, or Autoimmune Disease or specify a particular disease by typing a disease term into the free text box. The free text search box has autocomplete functionality and will suggest possible matches. Alternatively, one can browse the hierarchical Disease Tree by clicking the "Find" button.  The Disease Finder allows one to search for healthy subjects or those with disease. Diseases are organized at the highest level by transplant-related disease and allo-reactivity, allergy, infectious disease, autoimmune disease, and additional diseases by category, which are diseases that do not fall into one of the other categories.  Each disease term has a formal identifier. Identifiers are either taken from the Disease Ontology (DO) as DOIDs or are internal IEDB identifiers as DTREE identifiers. The Disease Ontology provides definitions and hierarchical relationships between terms. Users can click on DOIDs to link out to DO for further information on each disease term. DTREE identifiers are used when a disease is encountered in the literature and does not yet exist in DO. In these cases, we utilize internal IEDB identifiers, which will ultimately be replaced by DOIDs once they become available.

Figure 1 shows the Disease Tree with diabetes highlighted.  DOID refers to the Disease Ontology identifier.  The DTREE designates an IEDB-specific identifier that will be updated later with a DOID number when the Disease Ontology incorporates the terms.
